Its planting season again!
It’s Planting season again and we have been busy!
With three planting days taking place over April, May, and June, Project Tongariro and its team of wonderful volunteers have once again been getting native trees planted around Tuki Street, Tauranga Taupō.
The season started with a bang as many turned out on a beautiful Autumn morning to help us plant over 2,000 trees. We were joined by Rotary Hutt Valley, who came all this way to help with the mahi! The planting season kicked off on April 28th, when we planted 2,040 trees with the support of 68 dedicated volunteers. There were 13 members from the Lower Hutt Rotary, who have been joining us annually since 2018.
On May 18th, 34 enthusiastic participants helped us plant 2,120 trees. We were also treated to the delightful sight of over 100 Pīwakawaka, which added a touch of nature's charm to the day.
Our final planting day on June 8th saw 46 volunteers planting 1,960 trees. This day was particularly special as Karyn Bishop won a possum lumbar roll for planting our 40,000th tree since the project's inception ten years ago. Additionally, Ian Campbell, who planted our 30,000th tree in 2022, received the last possum prize cushion.
To top it all off, venison sausages from Mark’s brother were a hit during our last two planting days, providing a delicious reward for all the hard work.
Thank you to everyone who made these days possible!
